Outpost | Co-Living for Van Dwellers

A New Way to Be a Part of a Community

This is a personal project. Before I began my ‘vanlife’ journey, I had a theory that people on the road would enjoy having a community they can go to for when they’re craving human interaction (life on the road can be lonely) and have great internet since most vanlifers work remotely. The idea is a casual co-living where guests bring their own bed (BYOB) aka their van. It would be a network of large properties of at least 20 acres that have a co-working space with excellent internet and snacks, a place for music events, common areas to hang outside, swimming hole, showers, and a big laundry room. Guests would have a membership with a required background check to ensure utmost safety.

The property would also host several small AirBnB cabins on the outskirts of the property as an additional and more lucrative income stream to ensure the vanlifers who stay at Outpost can stay at an incredibly affordable rate.

There would also be smaller Outposts scattered throughout the country made for 1-3 groups of people with just a laundry room and fully fenced in for to keep our doggie companions safe. These would act as safe overnight stays and a place to get your errands done when you’re in between destinations while still being in nature.

After traveling around the United States in our van, I learned that my theory was correct and a network of Outposts would have made our trip drastically better. I learned that traveling in a van is exhausting, especially when you’re in an area where it’s difficult to find a campground. Having a place where we can stay for a week and recharge with all the amenities we need and meet new friends would have been a dream.
